Automating Blog Post Images with ChatGPT’s New Image Model + Notion + Zapier
At work.flowers, we're always looking for ways to make our workflows smarter and faster—especially when it comes to content creation. Recently, OpenAI launched an exciting new capability: ChatGPT's image generation model is now available via API (announcement here).
Naturally, we had to try it out.
In this post, I'll share how we've combined Notion, ChatGPT's new image generation API, Cloudinary, and Zapier to automatically create custom blog cover images—no manual design work needed.

Here's how it works:

1. Write Blog Content in Notion

Our blog posts start their lives in a Notion database. This is where we draft and manage all our articles (our website is built using Notion + Bullet.so).

2. Auto-Generate an Image Prompt

We added a Notion AI property to each post that automatically suggests an image generation prompt. Based on the blog content and aligned with our brand guidelines, it creates prompts that ensure images match the spirit of each article—without requiring human intervention.
It might seem counterintuitive, but using AI to write AI prompts is incredibly effective.

3. Trigger the Image Creation with a Button

We added a simple database button to the Notion page. When clicked, it sends a webhook trigger to start a Zap in Zapier.

4. Zapier Handles the Magic Behind the Scenes

The Zap does the following:
  • Pulls the AI-generated prompt from Notion
  • Sends the prompt to ChatGPT's image generation API
  • Receives a beautiful, AI-generated image back in base64 format, and converts it to a usable image file via another service I just discovered, called Cloudinary
  • Finally, saves the Cloudinary URL back into a "Cover Image" property in our Notion database, since Notion's API doesn't allow direct cover image updates

Why We Love This Setup

  • It's Seamless: Writers don't have to leave Notion or think about images anymore.
  • It's Fast: From click to image, the whole process takes about a minute.
  • It's On-Brand: By customizing the prompt generation, the resulting images stay consistent with our aesthetic.
  • It's Scalable: As we publish more frequently, our team won't be bottlenecked by manual design work.

Final Thoughts

This is just one example of how newer AI tools are quietly transforming the workflows that power creative teams. With a little imagination (and a few Zaps), the future of content creation can be smarter, faster, and a whole lot more fun.
